Postage rates increase

The cost for mailing is changing effective Monday May 12. The price for postcards and letters will be increasing by one cent. The cost for larger envelopes will be going up three cents and parcels will be four cents. Also, all international mail will now be subject to the same shape-based pricing as domestic mail, as well as increasing in price. Postcards and one ounce letters to Mexico and Canada will go up three cents with the price to all other countries increasing by four cents.

There two things that are worth pointing out. First, the US Postal Service has introduced a new flat rate Priority mail box which has about a 50% larger capacity than the other two flat rate boxes. The Mailing price for the larger box is $12.95 but if mailed to an APO or FPO address the price is $10.95. The new price for the smaller flat rate Priority Mail boxes is $9.80. The second item is that price for Express Mail may be less in some instances. The price for a flat rate Express Mail envelope will be $16.50. An envelope or package weighing up to 8 ounces sent Express Mail to Chicago, for example will be $12.80.

Please be aware that any mail brought to the mailroom or put in the off-campus mail slot after the mail is taken on at 2:30 p.m. today will be subject to the new postage prices.
