Wrestlers compete in Chuck Porter Duals

The Prairie Fire wrestling team hosted five schools in a four-round dual meet this past Saturday, compiling an 0-4 record as a team. Knox dropped a 35-9 decision to Wheaton College and a 30-24 match to Hannibal-LaGrange College before being shut out by the eventual winners of the day, North Central College, 45-0. Later, the Fire lost a 34-10 match to Central College.

Individually, the biggest bright spot for Knox was sophomore Edel Vaca, who went 2-1 in personal matches. Vaca, who wrestles in the 133-pound weight class, defeated Wheaton’s Johnathan Sbraccia 11-6 in his first match before being pinned by Hannibal-LaGrange’s Casey Cates over four minutes into the match. He then sat out the third match in order to regain strength for his later match against Erik Wilkerson of Central.

“I really hate to make excuses, but before I wrestled Cates from Hannibal LaGrange, I was feeling somewhat ill,” Vaca said. “[Before the last match], I just needed some time for my stomach to settle.

Coach Tony Islas’ decision to rest his sophomore worked brilliantly. Vaca defeated Wilkerson in a major decision, 15-3.

“Every time I wrestle, I focus on essentials,” Vaca said. “I never concentrate on big, flashy moves or advanced, fan-pleasing tricks. To me, winning a match is about a simple takedown and a quick stand-up.”

Senior Grant Guimond (157), sophomore Danny Stafford (165), seniors Aaron Barnett (174), Marty Dertz (184), and freshman Alex Faulkner (197) all won matches by forefeit in the loss to Hannibal-LaGrange. Additionally, Faulkner also pinned Central’s Kyle Patterson in 3:22.

In team play, North Central won the day with a 4-0 team record. Wheaton and Milwaukee School of Engineering each finished with a 3-1 record. Central and Hannibal-LaGrange posted 1-3 marks.
