Fire cannot repeat last year’s performance at Midwest Conference meet, finish tied for fourth place

The Prairie Fire came close, but could not quite get the job done at the annual Midwest Conference Men’s Golf Championships hosted by Lawrence University this past weekend.

Knox finished with a three-day stroke total of 956, just 13 shots off the lead, but finished in a tie for fourth place with Grinnell College. Monmouth College finished atop the leaderboard with a 943 team total for the three-round event in Rockford, Ill.

Knox finished the first day seven shots back and never rebounded as the Scots put together a coalition of three solid rounds to take the crown. Grinnell posted the best one-day team total with a 306 on day two.

Individually, the Fire boasted two top ten finishers on the weekend. Freshmen Bobby Steubi and Jamie Jang played outstanding golf to pace the Prairie Fire. Steubi’s three-day total of 233 (+17) was 11 shots off the individual leader and was good for a sixth-place finish. Jang finished three shots back of Steubi (+20) and took home eighth place for the weekend.

Illinois College’s Mark Strain shot a final round 71 (-1) to finish with a 222 (+6) for the weekend to take home individual medalist honors.

The Prairie Fire and Fighting Scots now have a virtual chokehold on the Midwest Conference men’s golf trophy, as each team has won twice in the last four years. Knox took home the trophy in 2006 and 2008, while Monmouth’s win this year was its first men’s golf championship since 2007.

Monmouth will now continue on to the National Tournament, to which they gained an automatic berth by way of their victory this weekend. Knox was the Midwest Conference’s automatic qualifier last year, where now-graduated standout David Marquardt took home Second Team All-America honors for his individual performance.
