First meeting of the 99th Student Senate

The first session of the 99th Knox College Student Senate was held in the Round Room of CFA this past Thursday. There was no actual senate business handled during the meeting; rather, it was designed as an orientation and refresher for senators old and new.

Senate Parliamentarian David Barton ‘11 gave a presentation on parliamentary procedure, the importance of which is being stressed this year by the Executive Council of Senate. This comes largely in response to several conflicts that arose during last year’s sessions over a lack of parliamentary knowledge.

Barton’s talk covered the basics of how parliamentary procedure functions during meetings, and culminated with a demonstration of the procedure by having Vice President Trevor Sorenson dressing up in feminine clothing supplied by President Heather Kopec. At the end of the mock session, Sorenson was wearing a yellow blouse and pink heart-shaped sunglasses. “I think I look hot,” Sorenson said.

Other topics covered during the meeting included committee sign-ups, attendance policy, and introductions by members of the executive council.

At the start of the year, the Student Senate discretionary fund was estimated to be at around $55,000 for the year.
