A step for prevention

During last year’s student-run forums on sexual assault on campus, many students expressed a desire to have a specific person to whom they could take their issues related to sexual assault. This year, a person in that position exists.

Her name is Rachel, but she more often goes by Elle. Anonymity is the standard for her because of the nature of her work. Her official title is the medical and legal advocate for sexual assault.

“I can respond 24/7 to the hospital or assist someone to the hospital,” Elle said. She also can assist people in getting orders of protection, civil no contact orders or civil no stalking orders.

An order of protection is specifically for people who are either married or related by blood. A civil no contact order is designed for people who want an order against someone who is their friend, fellow student or someone to which they have no relation.

Elle began her position in July. She works out of Macomb, Ill. but is in her office in Galesburg from Monday through Thursday at the Health Department. All her services are free.

“Because of stimulus money from Obama,” Dean of Students Debbie Southern said, “Elle is now in Knox County.”

Contact Elle at (309) 331 – 4716.
