Swimmers kick off new season at Monmouth

Starting the season without key swimmers on each side, the men’s and women’s swimming teams competed in their first meet at Monmouth College last Wednesday.

Missing junior Tyler O’Neill on the men’s side, and a number of swimmers on the women’s side, each squad lost to Monmouth. The women fell 111 to 90, and the men a lopsided 152 to 19.

Still, the Prairie Fire had some strong performances. Junior Tory Kassabaum took second in the 200 yard freestyle, and first in the 100 yard butterfly and 500 yard freestyle. Kassabaum was also part of the 200 yard freestyle relay team that placed first. Kassabaum was joined by sophomore Amanda Lee and juniors Anne Heberle and Rachel Clark.

Clark, who will only be able to compete in November and December due to her off-campus program, took the 50 yard freestyle and finished second in the 100 yard freestyle.

Junior Bess Cooley took first in the 200 yard individual medley, and second in the 100 yard breaststroke.

The men were led by junior Jeff Wickman, who took second in the 200 yard individual medley.

Both teams will be in action this coming Saturday in the Monmouth Invitational at Monmouth College. Events begin at 11 a.m.
