Whether you call it the “Rog Mahal,” “Rog Lodge,” or “The Roger Taylor Student Lounge,” the new student lounge is a hit. For one, it’s public space for students with plenty of seating, brand new paint and floors, pool tables, ping-pong, a Nintendo Wii and board games that can be checked out. The Rog Mahal is chock-full of awesomeness.
Not only that, but the lounge has quickly become a hang-out and homework spot for students and is becoming integrated into day-to-day student life. So far I have done reading for class, watched people gyrate while playing a Wii dancing game, listened to people swear as they used a pool table and witnessed a divisive game of Apples to Apples. In all of it people seemed to be having fun, and the activities were certainly encouraged by the new digs.
In a lot of ways there is not a whole lot to be said about the new lounge besides the fact that it provides a much-needed public space on campus that does not smell like french fries and is not located in a dorm. It is almost confusing that this space exists now, after many years of habits formed without it. It is now possible to meet people somewhere other than the Gizmo or the library. It will take time before it really becomes apparent how the lounge will be used, abused and enjoyed. The real question now is what the lounge ultimately will be nicknamed.
