Summer music festivals heating up

With summer just a few days away, the music scene is heating up. Dozens of concerts will be held with a variety of genres. Here are some of the best-known festivals.

Location: Los Angeles, Calif.
Dates: Aug. 6
Headliners: Ratatat, Skrillex, Chromeo
Also Performing: Noisia, Jack Beats, Digitalism, Carte Blanche, Odd Future
HARD’s showcase of alternative and electronic music enters its fifth year with over 20 bands scheduled to perform in one day. The HARD summer tour continues until Aug. 20.

Austin City Limits Festival
Location: Austin, Tex.
Dates: Sept. 16-19
Headliners: Stevie Wonder, Kanye West, Coldplay
Also Performing: Big Boi, Sara Bareilles, Randy Newman
Another festival celebrating an anniversary, Austin City Limits is in its 10th year of bringing the popular PBS series to the public. Solo artists dominate the lineup, while Coldplay makes another appearance on the summer scene.

Location: Manchester, Tenn.
Dates: June 9-12
Headliners: Arcade Fire, Lil Wayne, Eminem
Also Performing: The Strokes, Buffalo Springfield, Alison Krauss and Union Station
Celebrating its tenth year of existence, Bonnaroo continues to feature a wide range of musical styles. Though rap dominates the top billing this year, Bonnaroo will feature alternative rock, country and classic rock groups.

Location: Milwaukee, Wis.
Dates: June 29-July 10
Headliners: Katy Perry, Maroon 5, Wiz Khalifa
Also Performing: Panic! At the Disco, Styx, Third Eye Blind, Peter Frampton
Occurring since 1968, the country’s largest festival does not disappoint this year, landing stars like Katy Perry and Wiz Khalifa, in addition to a very solid undercard. Running through the Fourth of July holiday, the festival also features comedy acts and fireworks.

Ravinia Festival
Location: Highland Park, Ill.
Dates: Between June and September
Headliners: Maroon 5, Steely Dan, Jennifer Hudson
Also Performing: Moody Blues, Hall and Oates, Peter Frampton
As the oldest outdoor music festival in the U.S., Ravinia continues to bring the masses to the Chicago suburbs. Maroon 5 headlines with two dates, but classic rock dominates the rest of the calendar.

Location: Chicago, Ill.
Dates: Aug. 5-7
Headliners: Eminem, Foo Fighters, Coldplay, Muse, Cee Lo Green
Also Performing: OK Go, The Cars, Arctic Monkeys, Deftones
Chicago’s biggest music festival has once again landed some of the biggest stars in music. The festival will be celebrating its twentieth anniversary, and with performances from the likes of Coldplay and Eminem, looks to be one of its most memorable.

Jackson White
Jackson White is a senior double majoring in political science and secondary education. This is his third year as a sports editor for TKS. Over the course of the 2010-2011 academic year, Jackson worked for, writing feature stories and columns about high school and college baseball in central Illinois. Outside of the Publications Office, he is an information assistant for the Knox College Sports Information Department and a two-time all-Midwest Conference baseball player. Jackson is the recipient of five awards from the Illinois College Press Association, including two first place awards for sports game coverage and sports page design.
