Tennis victorious in four of last five matches

With a 9-0 win over Illinois College on Tuesday, the Knox College women’s tennis team clinched their fourth win in their last five matches heading into the final week of the regular season.

Sr. Sarah Bolitho goes for the ball during the match against Millikin University Sunday, Sept. 30.

Knox had previously beaten the Lady Blues 9-0 back in September and replicated the performance for their third straight win.

Sophomore Claire Neri* had the best performance for the Prairie Fire by clinching a 6-0, 6-0 victory in number five singles.

The triumph over the Lady Blues came on the heels of a weekend that saw Knox take out conference opponents Ripon College and Millikin University—both with a score of 8-1.

Junior Charlotte Garvin and senior Emily Brand have both gone unbeaten in singles play during this stretch of good play for the Prairie Fire, while Brand and senior Sarah Bolitho are unbeaten in doubles play over the same time period.

Knox’s lone loss in the last three weeks was a heartbreaker to Beloit. The 5-4 loss came down to a number of extremely tight games, including senior Emily Tyl’s 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-4) crushing singles loss to the Buccaneers’ Libby Storick.

Despite the loss, Knox is still over .500 in conference play, compiling a 3-2 record against members of the Midwest Conference South Division. The team is 5-7 overall.

The Prairie Fire have just one regular season match remaining before the 2012 Midwest Conference Women’s Tennis Team, Doubles, and Singles Championships on Oct. 12-14.  Knox celebrates Senior Day on Saturday, Oct. 6 when they take on Lake Forest.
