Winter sports roundup

Wrestling

After dropping their first three matches of the Max Servies  Duals, the Prairie Fire wrestling team notched a 30-21 victory over Ohio Northern University on Saturday, Jan. 19 in Crawfordsville, Ind.

Knox lost Mount St. Joseph (43-6), Central College (60-0) and Wabash College (32-15) before taking out Ohio Northern to earn seventh place in the event.

With the two teams matched up in only four weight classes, the margin of error was slim for the Prairie Fire.

Even after taking two of the first three individual matches, Knox still needed junior Steve Bora  to beat ONU’s Steve Biben to clinch the victory. Fortunately for the Prairie Fire, he did.

Bora pinned Biben at the 3:26 mark of the match, which before that point had not featured a single point.

Junior Rey Cardenas and sophomore Greg Ventris were the other wrestlers to come out victorious against ONU.

Knox next match takes place on Friday, Jan. 25 when the Prairie Fire face Wheaton College in Rock Island, Ill.

Swimming

The Knox College women’s swim team earned a split while the men’s team lost both matches in a tri-meet against Illinois College and Monmouth College on Saturday, Jan. 19 in Monmouth, IL.

Senior Zoey Kudla had the top performance for the Knox women by winning the 400 yard individual medley. Kudla did so by shaving 14 seconds off her previous best time.

Sophomore Susannah Lodge-Rigal placed second in two events (1,650 and 500-yard freestyles), while junior Marie Anderson had top five finishes in the 50-yard freestyle, 100-yard freestyle and 100-yard backstroke.

On the men’s side, Knox’s best performer was freshman Sam Chen, who turned in top five finishes in the 100-yard backstroke and 100-yard freestyle.

Men’s basketball

The losing streak is now at 11 for the Knox men’s basketball team. Knox dropped a home contest 72-43 to Lawrence on Saturday, Jan. 19 before losing 90-72 to Cornell College this past Wednesday.

Knox went without a double digit scorer against the Vikings while sophomore Mitch Murphy led the Prairie Fire with 20 points in the loss to the Rams.
