Local unemployment rate rises

GALESBURG — The local unemployment rate hit 8.6 percent in December, up from 8.2 in November but down from 9 percent the year before. The Galesburg metropolitan area has seen News briefsmoderate improvement over that time, adding some 75 total jobs. Bloomington-Normal had the state’s lowest unemployment rate at 6.3 percent, and Decatur had the highest at 11.8 percent.(Source: The Galesburg Register-Mail)

Obama calls for immigration reform

LAS VEGAS — President Obama announced his support for a total overhaul of American immigration policies on Tuesday, calling current laws “out of date and badly broken.” This comes after a group of eight senators proposed a new plan that would provide an eventual path to citizenship for the nation’s 11 million undocumented immigrants. The President made immigration reform a key promise of his 2008 campaign and disappointed many supporters by failing to make any progress on the issue during his first term. (Source: CNN)

Nightclub fire kills hundreds in Brazil

SANTA MARIA, BRAZIL — 234 people were killed in a fire in a crowded nightclub on Sunday morning caused by the use of illegal fireworks. The club lacked sprinklers and had only a single exit for over a thousand people. The disaster comes at a moment of heightened scrutiny for Brazil as it prepares to host both the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympics. The government in Brasilia promised new nationwide safety regulations for nightclubs as Sao Paolo, the nation’s largest city, independently promised that they will make all nightclubs safe by the World Cup.
