Pritchard attended Knox, never graduated

When asked about some inaccurate reports that Galesburg mayor-elect John Pritchard graduated from Knox College, he said it was never his intention to mislead voters.

Pritchard entered Knox with the class of 1978, attended as a full-time student during his freshman year and took classes whenever possible for the next four years, he told The Knox Student in a phone interview Wednesday. Pritchard never received a bachelor’s degree.

“I’ve never told anyone that I’m a graduate,” Pritchard said. “I think my life experience in business is probably a greater qualification than a bachelor’s degree from Knox.”

In an October 8, 2012 article in The Galesburg Register-Mail announcing Pritchard’s candidacy, he was identified as a Knox College graduate. In a March 31 candidate-submitted questionnaire on the front page, Pritchard listed his education as: “Graduated from GHS in 1974. Knox College alumnus with focus on economics.”

According to Pritchard, he stopped taking classes on a full-time basis due to his mother’s health and immersion in the business world. Pritchard became the publisher of The Register-Mail in 1976, and he said he was involved with investing at that point.
