New major added in Latin American studies

Students will now be able to complete a major in Latin American Studies following a vote at today’s faculty meeting.

The goal is for a student graduating with the new major to be proficient in Spanish at an advanced level as well as be familiar with the history, culture, current events and literature of Latin America.

The new major will require 10 credits, consisting of:

  • PS 122 (Intro to Latin American Studies) and HIST 121 (Introduction to Latin American History)
  • Two of the following: SPAN 230 B,C, D or E
  • Six electives on Latin American topics, of which at least two are history or social science, two of which are 300-level and three of which are taught in Spanish (courses can satisfy multiple requirements)
  • A senior capstone (LAST 399 or 400)
  • An off-campus study abroad or equivalent (internship, research, etc.) experience in Latin America.

Students who have off-campus language work in another regional language, especially Portuguese, will be able to petition the chair to have their language replace the Spanish requirement.

Latin American Studies was previously a minor, although several students in past years had self-designed majors in the field, helping to lead to the creation of the major.
