Knox College recently received a $400,000 Faculty Career Enhancement grant from the Mellon Foundation. The grant will help to bring new teaching methods and ideas to classrooms over the next three years.
The college received a similar grant four years ago for faculty research. The Committee for Faculty Resources was formed to manage the allocation of the prior funds and will be responsible for handling the newly received grant money as well. The committee consists of faculty members who review one another’s work and determine what applications to suggest to the Dean, who ultimately decides how the funds are allocated.
The funds will be used in a variety of ways to improve teaching methodologies. This summer there will be two faculty workshops held with funding from the grant. The first will be on technology in the classroom and the other on fostering inclusivity in diverse classrooms. Additionally, the funds will be used in developing interdisciplinary courses and implementing new pedagogies in classes.
“More faculty will be aware of what innovations there [are] in teaching today,” said Associate Dean of Faculty Development Michael Schneider about the improvements it will bring.
The funds will be available exclusively for faculty use, with students benefitting from the outcomes of faculty spending. The previous grant’s effects can be seen in the inception of several courses at Knox, including Chinese Economy and the Jordan Archaeological program, as well as in the science lab facilities.
The college must follow the Mellon Foundation’s guidelines when spending the grant money. The criteria are divided into four broad categories: Enhancement of Interdisciplinary Activities, Collaborative Research, Technology and the Classroom and summer workshops for faculty. Additionally, funds must go towards faculty development.
The grant will help the college in accomplishing some of the Knox 2018 goals.
The grant aims to change teaching and scholarship at Knox for the better. By putting emphasis on faculty development, students can hope to receive a higher quality of education in their classes.
