TKS brings home record-breaking awards

The Knox Student brought home 19 awards from the Illinois Collegiate Press Association last week — more than ever before.

The awards were given out at the Doubletree in Chicago Feb. 20, 2016 where TKS competed with other schools with non-daily newspapers with a circulation under 4,000. Two of the awards received this year, though, were open categories — open to the entire state.

Junior and graphic designer Donna Boguslavsky received first place for her graphic design in one of the open categories. This is her first year working for TKS.

“It was such a shock and an honor,” Boguslvaky said. “I never expected to receive any award for the work I did here at TKS, but now that I have it has completely changed how I view graphic design and journalism.”

Senior and co-sports editor Sam Watkins won three awards from ICPA, one of which she shared with her co-editor senior Gavin Crowell. It’s also her first year as an editor for TKS.

“I didn’t even expect to win anything. I was just going for fun,” she said.

For editor-in-chief Casey Mendoza, the amount of awards reflects a wide array of talent on staff. Mendoza brought four awards home.

“Before we used to get a lot of awards for our stories which was impressive but this year we got more for design which is important, having a more well-rounded newspaper,” she said.
