It was a slow week for Knox Athletics, with many matches ending in a not so favorable outcome. But, as always, athletes like sophomore distance runner Frances Larsen stood out with impressive individual performances.
Larsen earned her spot at the top as our Performer of the Week for her performance in the women’s 3000 meter steeplechase, earning first place with a time of 12:52.83. This time also puts her in third place for best Knox performance ever.
Larsen’s impressive record was made at Western Illinois University’s Lee Calhoun Memorial Invitational on Friday and Saturday. Both the men’s and women’s team placed ninth out of 11 teams.
Along with Larsen, other members of the team were able to place and even break some records. Freshman Malik Hamilton finished with a time of 11.13 in the men’s 100 meter dash, and Njoh Malafa finished the men’s 200 meter dash with a time of 22.45, both earning sixth-best individual times at Knox for their respective races.
Senior captain Brennan McGlauchlen earned ninth-best throw in Knox history for his hammer throw at 144’5”.
With consistent success in individual performances like Larsen’s, the team hopes to continue pushing each other individually to elevate the overall team score in future competitions.
The Prairie Fire will compete on the road Saturday, April 23, at the University of Dubuque Invite.
