Knox Men’s Golf concluded their season during the Midwest Conference Championship at Aldeen Golf Course this past weekend. The team was unable to hold their two-day lead over Lawrence University, falling on the third day and finishing eighth out of eight teams.
Despite this unsavory season finish for the Prairie Fire, freshman Duncan Wheeler stood out for his impressive consistent performance throughout the tournament, earning him player of the week.
Wheeler concluded the Midwest Conference Championship tying for third overall individually out of 47 players, with a total score of 236.
This performance is proven more impressive by the fact that Wheeler, as a freshman, tied Monmouth’s senior and top golfer Drake Decker for third.
Wheeler finished the Midwest Conference Championships 20 over par. Half as many as his next teammate sophomore Patrick Martin, who ended 43 over par. Martin seasonally averaged two less than Wheeler (80- 82.3).
Looking forward, big things can be expected of Wheeler; the first place overall individual winner from Carroll College also graduates this year, leaving room for new golfers to surface and players like Wheeler to rise.
With great success in his first year, becoming the second best player on the team, second to Martin, Wheeler has proved himself a contender for the upcoming seasons.
