Knox Ultimate Frisbee competed in Division III Nationals this past weekend in Winston-Salem, N.C. and managed to place fifth overall. Senior captain Harper Garvey was a major contributor for the team’s success throughout the season, and specifically at the tournament, earning him player of the week.
Garvey has been captain of Knox’s Ultimate team this year, as well as during his sophomore year. He also plays for an Ultimate club team named Sub Zero based in Minnesota. To play on a club team of this caliber, ultimate players must be extremely talented.
Garvey is the first person to come onto the Knox team with such extensive previous knowledge and experience. His experience has helped the team build and grow. With the help of fellow senior captains Ben Stanger and Adam Schrag, Garvey has helped to cultivate a new team culture where hard work and having fun are the main components that have now culminated into their success at nationals.
At nationals, Knox’s total points scored landed in the mid 60s, with Garvey assisting 41, placing him well above the competition in assist stats at nationals.
Though Garvey and the other seniors who have built the program to what it is now will be graduating, they have left Knox Ultimate in a better state than how they found it, transforming it from a team into a winning program.
