Sports briefs

Track and field — The track and field teams competed at Millikin University on April 6. The women finished fifth out of six teams and the men finished third. Freshman Lydia Mitchell earned fourth in the women’s 400m dash with a time of 1:09.09. Senior Alice Lee placed second in the women’s shot put with a distance of 10.82m. Freshman Derrick Jackson placed fifth in the men’s 100m dash with a time of 10.94 seconds. Freshman Austin Rauch placed first in the men’s high jump with a jump of 2.05m, another record-setter for Knox. Knox will continue on April 13 when they face off against Mount Mercy University.

Men’s tennis — The men played St. Norbert College on April 7 for another conference matchup. The men fell 0-9 to Norbert. Senior Jared Schwarz barely lost his #2 singles match, with scores of 2-6, 6-4 and 6-10. Junior Brad Newland lost 2-6 and 4-6 in his #1 singles match. Senior Kyle Yang lost 0-6 and 4-6 in his singles matchup. The team celebrated Henry Betts as a part of MDA Awareness Day. Henry and his father, Jon Betts, joined the team to celebrate and cheer them on. The Fire will travel to Principia on April 12 to continue their season.

Baseball — The Fire played a doubleheader against Grinnell College on April 7. The Fire fell 11-1 in the first game, but came back in game two, winning 2-1. Junior Andrew Ponce pitched in the second game for the Fire, striking out eight of the Pioneers and successfully shutting them down in the bottom half of the final inning, and clinched the win. The men now sit at 3-5 in conference. Junior Tristan Hannah gained a run towards the end of the second game, and helped the Fire to the win. The men will play on April 13 at Ripon College at noon.

Softball — The Fire faced off against Eureka College on April 9 in a double header. The women lost both matches, with scores 11-3 and 12-2. Sophomores Britney Salinas and Mady Ferris had three hits each and led the Prairie Fire. Junior Katy Coseglia had a pair of doubles on the day and also had two runs. Sophomore Cammie Stein had one run in game two. The Fire will play on April 13 and 14 in Wisconsin to face off against Beloit College and Ripon College.
