Rocky Horror Picture Show

It is one of the most celebrated cult classics of all time, and it is coming to a theater near you -- complete with all the fineries. This Halloween, the Orpheum Theatre will be screening “The Rocky Horror Picture Show”.

A unique film, “Rocky Horror” borrows the themes and conventions of classic horror films and spins them into something beyond bizarre. It follows the story of an innocent couple who find themselves stranded at the castle of a mad scientist, Dr. Frank-N-Furter, who is in the process of creating the perfect man. Intrigue and oddities abound as the couple catches more than a glimpse of the strange world of Dr. Frank-N-Furter and his followers.

The movie opened in 1975 to poor reviews, but by the ‘80s, “Rocky Horror” became a cult classic, with midnight showings and weekly movie-going rituals across the country.

For the past few years, the Orpheum has been showing the movie to enthusiastic students and residents of the Galesburg area.

Brett Cornish, the Vice President of Marketing, said, “This is the first showing of “Rocky Horror” here this year. We thought it would be a great tie-in with Halloween to show it on Halloween night.”

The event promises to be full of thrills; the main focus may be the film, but there are also going to be entertaining events accompanying it. Everyone is allowed and encouraged to bring props to the show, some of which include confetti, water guns, party hats, and flashlights. Be sure to get there early, because at 8:30 p.m., there will be a costume contest. Dress up as outrageously as possible, and you’ll have the chance to win tickets to the Dec. 18 Chicago City Limits improv show.

“A lot of people dress up and get into it. You can dress up for the movie, or for Halloween in general,” said facility manager, Josh Damewood.

Participation during the movie is a must. One of the biggest aspects of the show is dancing. Don’t fret about not knowing the steps -- during the “Time Warp”, the steps are given in the song, and dancing along is essential. There will also be a great many times to throw props and shout lines back to the screen. A boring moment is definitely not to be had this evening.

On Halloween night, sit back, laugh, cry, and dance, but don’t miss out on Rocky Horror!
