TKE’s back lawn was covered with people, armed with their cardboard and thick tape, ready to construct their entries in Habitat for Humanity’s Shanty Town. The activity took place on Monday and was a fundraiser for Habitat to raise money for building houses, buying supplies, and paying mortgages for Galesburg residents.

“We’re really excited about how many people came,” said freshman Jackie Stillmaker, an executive member for Habitat for Humanity. “It’s a really good time.”

Teams of builders, many of whom have been members of Habitat for Humanity or worked with them, entered their structures, which ranged from actual houses to castles to unicorns, in a contest to win several prizes in addition to prizes the group was raffling off. Prizes were from Wal-Mart and included a 20-inch television, DVD players, digital cameras, stereos, and i-Pod shuffles. The cardboard also came from Wal-Mart, Target, and Radchees in Galesburg, and it was all used.

“[The builders] are so serious,” said Stillmaker. “They used their imagination.”

Habitat will send the money they raised to their affiliate in Galesburg, who will double their money, then use it to help people in need.

“I think we did a really good job,” said Stillmaker. “We had a lot of help from the old executive members.”

In addition to the Shanty Town, there was also a barbeque and a cotton candy machine on the TKE porch. The group has been planning this event throughout spring term. Stillmaker is happy with the way it turned out.

“Next year we’re going to try to get as many cardboard boxes as we can,” said Stillmaker.
